Vitamin B12, or Cyanocobalamin, was first discovered in 1948 as a nutritional factor that is vital for red blood cell production. B12 also works with folic acid to maintain healthy homocysteine levels in the body. That added folic acid is critical to the fetus during the first three months of pregnancy, also making it beneficial to women wishing to conceive.

THE ROAD TO RIO

Global F.I.T. Athlete Barbara Filiou will be representing Greece at the Olympic Games in Rio this year. She tells us what this experience has in store for her.

To achieve my goal of qualifying to the Olympic Games, I had to move to the Olympic Training Center of Russia, far away from my family and the people I love! For the past 2 years leading up to the 2015 World Championships, the qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games, I have been living and training in Russia, only going home to Athens in Greece for Christmas and the Greek National Championships. Russia has been the leading country in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics for many years, which is why I ultimately decided to moved there. The Olympic Training Center in Novogorsk is home to not only the best rhythmic gymnasts in the world, but also the best and most experienced coaches, top choreographers, and a world-class training facility specifically designed for the needs of rhythmic gymnasts. Moving to Russia has given me the opportunity to learn from the best, train amongst the best and to be in the best training facility in the world.

Rhythmic gymnastics is a tough sport and it requires many hours of very difficult daily training. I dedicated most of my time to the training, up to 8 hours per day, so as to achieve the best results. This preparation included not only work on my rhythmic gymnastics programs, but ballet training, strength and conditioning, cardio workouts and massage. In addition to the physical preparation in the Olympic Training Center, I competed in 15 to 20 competitions annually, so as to be prepared both physically and psychologically. For all athletes, being prepared mentally is just as important as being prepared physically, which is why my plan before big tournaments includes many smaller ones.

This year leading up to the Olympic Games will be a difficult one, but also one that I am looking forward to, as I strive to be better than I have ever been before. It is important that I am in perfect physical shape and in good health in order to compete at my best. Rhythmic gymnastics is an artistic sport which demands detailed choreography and synchronizing movement and harmony to music. Because of this, I need to improve and perfect every movement and every detail in each of my four programs. This will require many additional hours of hard training, a good psychological state, and taking care of my diet to ensure that my weight is stable. As far as this is concerned, Aloe Vera products are very important and will help offer the support, strength and replenishment I need when my body is exhausted from training. As I work toward my goals for the Olympic Games in Rio, I will continue my training at the Olympic Training Center in Novogorsk, Russia. This will allow me to continue to train under the best circumstances. I will also participate in many competitions which I should prepare. The schedule includes lots of travel abroad, including Grand Prix events, World Cups, the Greek National Championships and European Championships. I want to achieve the best possible results in the World Cups, which are the important events leading up to Rio, but in 2016, the most important tournament for me will be the European Championships which will take place in Holon, Israel. My goal is to be in the top 6 at this event. And finally, as I travel to Brazil in August, I aim to achieve my biggest goal, to be one of the top 12 finalists in the 2016 Olympic Games!

TIPS TO LOOK BETTER. FEEL BETTER.

Having spent the last year preparing and training for my first competition (and achieving awesome results), I have been invited to share my top nutrition and exercise tips with you. I'm passionate about helping others with nutrition and exercise so it’s a real privilege to be able to help you.
Nutrition

Nutrition is key, as is preparation and always having the right sort of foods and snacks available; this is crucial and should be the case both in the fridge and when out and about.

I eat five small meals a day; these always include protein. I recommend eating protein at least three times a day to help maintain lean tissue. As a snack I have protein pancakes, which I love, as they are high in protein and contain nuts and seeds rather than fruit which can be high in sugar (these pancakes also work as breakfast or a dessert). I focus on keeping my blood sugars level; if you crave sweet things, another great snack is avocado or a couple of dessert spoons of nuts and seeds.
Before I go to bed I eat Greek yogurt with a scoop of protein powder for flavour and a generous sprinkle of crushed seeds (such as chia, flax, sunflower and pumpkin). These are full of fibre and protein as well as vitamins and minerals.

My meals consist of green vegetables or salad and either salmon or cod, steak, chicken or lean beef mince, turkey or venison. I cook the vegetables in a variety of different ways; stir-fries are particularly quick and easy. I like to use fresh herbs like coriander and basil as well as fresh spices, including ginger and chillies.

I drink black coffee to keep my dairy intake to a minimum as I get my 'good fats' from other sources. My latest 'love' is 100% pure cacao! Chocoholics take note: it is good for you! It’s a useful source of magnesium, potassium and iron. I simply add a spoonful for flavour or make it into a drink. If you really have a sweet tooth though, try Xylitol as a sweetener instead of sugar.

I am a major advocate for drinking a lot of water as water is very important for many of our body's processes, and you should also use our fantastic supplements; my immune system benefits from many of the ingredients contained in certain Forever supplements.

Exercise

As for exercise it is crucial to set a goal; make a plan and stick to it! Consistency is key and essential to maintaining good habits and achieving your goals. It's also a great idea to include weight training exercises as this develops lean tissue and will burn more fat. I use HITT (high intensity tactical training) which is short bursts (for added fat burning) and cardio health – your body doesn't get used to it!

Getting good quality sleep for your body to repair and recover is also really important; I definitely notice a difference in how much I ache if I've not had enough hours. Finally I use Forever Garcinia Plus three times a day – because it contains chromium which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels – Forever Therm twice a day, and my absolute favourite, Argi+ – l love it!

Throughout this year I've found many of my new habits have rubbed off on my family: Izzy (12) now goes to the gym and Max (10) loves doing press ups and pull ups at home; he has even devised a mini programme! I've been really lucky to have amazing and positive support from my hubby, James, and my entire family – that’s just the 'icing on the shake'!
